As per the section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, submission of aadhar number is mandatory for PAN card application and filing income tax returns. It came in effect from July 1, 2017.
Steps of Linking Aadhaar with ITR:
Go to income tax e-filing website
Under quick links section, choose ‘link to aadhar’ option.
Enter your PAN and other details as mentioned on aadhar card
Enter the security code as displayed on the screen and request for OTP.
Finally click on ‘link aadhar’ for the completion of the process.
30 June 2021 has been set as the deadline for linking PAN and Aadhar, by the Income Tax Department. On failing to link Aadhar and PAN before the last date, the PAN card will turn inoperative from 1 July. If someone tries to use a PAN card that has turned inoperative, they may also be fined ₹10,000. The declaration came from CBDT (Central Board of Direct Taxes) in a notification on March 31, 2020.

On the ‘Link Aadhaar’ page, click on ‘click here’ link to check the status of link aadhar request.
Enter the PAN and aadhar number.
Click on ‘View Link Aadhar Status’ to check the status.
Is it compulsory to link aadhar with e-filing profile at income tax website?
Yes, without PAN and aadhar you won’t be able to file your income tax returns.
Do NRIs need to provide their aadhar card for filing income tax returns?
No, they are exempted from filing income tax returns.
