PAN is a mandatory document for many financial transactions, which is why it’s important for working adults to own a PAN card. However, when the transactions are made in relation to a minor, its necessary for the minor to have a PAN. NSDL issues PAN card for minors (individuals below the age of 18).

The benefits of a minor owning a Permanent Account Number are:

  • PAN is mandatory when a minor is listed as a nominee for a property
  • Investments that  made through the minor require him/her to own a PAN
  • Even when the minor turns into an adult he/she can use the same PAN details to track their financial transactions and income flow
  • When investments are made in the name of the minor, all tax related information could be collated by using PAN

How to apply for PAN for Minors

Online PAN Application process for minors

  1. Visit official TIN website
  2. Click on ‘online PAN application’
  3. Select the appropriate option from the drop-down menu; Form 49A or form 49AA depending on your residency status
  4. Select the ‘category of the applicant’
  5. Fill in the required details
  6. Upload the required documents
  7. Make the online payment
  8. After the form is filled, click on submit
  9. Collect your PAN reference number
  10. PAN card will be sent via post to your registered address

Offline PAN application process

  • Download and take a print-out of Form 49A or 49AA (depending on where you reside) from the Tax Information Website
  • Fill up the form manually
  • Attach copies of the documents required (for a minor, photograph isn’t required)
  • Submit the form in the nearest UTIITSL office
  • The PAN card will be sent to your residential address within 15 working days

  • Domicile certificate issued by the state government
  • Post Office passbook which has the applicant’s address
  • Property document
  • Original certificate of address issued by gazetted officer
  • Electricity bill
  • ‘Credit card statement

Proof of identity

  • Aadhar card
  • Passport
  • Ration card
  • Driver’s license
  • Voter’s ID
  • Original Identity certificate signed by MLA/MP/gazetted officer
