Citi Bank Closes Retail Banking Operations in India and 12 Other Countries

In an unforeseen move, Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser stated in a release that Citi Bank will be shutting down retail banking operations in 13 countries, including India.

The 13 countries in which Citi Bank will stop retail banking operations are India, Australia, Malaysia, Bahrain, Indonesia, Russia, China, Korea, Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Poland, and Thailand.

Explaining the move, the Citi Bank CEO Stated that while the 13 markets do have excellent businesses, CitiBank simply did not have the scale needed to compete. They will now only be concentrating on four major wealth hubs - Dubai, Singapore, London, and Hong Kong - where they will focus more on the wealth management services and quit retail banking. They will also continue offering investment banking related services for the remaining international market, via the Institutional Clients Group.
