PAN Application Process

Applying for PAN card in India is a reasonably easy procedure. An individual may apply through online or offline modes. In the online mode of PAN application, a taxpayer needs to visit the NSDL(National Securities Depository Limited) website or UTIITSL (UTI Infrastructure Technology and Services Limited) website and follow the necessary steps to register for a PAN card. In the offline mode, a taxpayer needs to visit the nearest district level PAN agency.

How to apply for PAN?

Online application

Follow these steps to apply for PAN card online

  1. Visit NSDL website or UTIITSL homepage
  2. Select the ‘new PAN’ option
  3. Click on the form 49A for Indian citizens which includes NRI, NRE and OCI individuals
  4. Fill up the following details in the online form
    1. Name
    2. Address
    3. Date of Birth
    4. Gender
    5. Telephone Number
    6. Income details
  5. Pay the processing fee
  6. Click on ‘submit’
  7. Take a printout of the application after receiving a 15-digit acknowledgment number
  8. Sign the application form
  9. Affix passport-size photographs on the application and proof of identity and address
  10. Send the documents to NSDL office via post within 15 days of payment
  11. Your PAN card will be sent within 15 working days to your residential address

Offline mode

  1. Download form 49A from official NSDL website
  2. Fill up the form
  3. Attach a photograph along with the residential and identity proof
  4. Write ‘APPLICATION FOR PAN’ and the acknowledgment on the top of the envelope
  5. Pay the fee via Demand Draft
  6. Send the DD receipt along with the application form and other ID proofs via post to the following address-
    Income Tax PAN Services Unit, NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited, 5th Floor, Mantri Sterling, Plot Number 341, Survey Number 997/8, Model Colony, Near Deep Bungalow Chowk, Pune-411016.

PAN Card Details

PAN stands for Permanent Account Number and it’s a unique 10-digit alphanumeric number allotted to the card owner. You can find out your PAN card details using ‘Know Your Pan’ service provided by the Income Tax Department

Follow these steps to acquire your PAN card details by using KYP(Know Your PAN)

  1. Visit the official e-filing website
  2. Select ‘Know Your PAN’ on the left panel of the webpage
  3. Enter the required details
  4. Enter the Captcha
  5. Click on ‘Submit’

  1. PAN Card Number
  2. Personal details like name, residential address etc
  3. Remarks on whether the PAN Card is active or not
  4. Jurisdiction

Form 60

When an individual doesn’t own a PAN card and he/she wishes to make financial transactions for which PAN details are mandatory, they can fill up Form 60 and along with the relevant documents, they can give it to the individual/company they are transacting with.

  2. Ration card
  3. ID card issued by a recognized institution
  4. Driver’s License
  5. Copy of telephone/electricity bill
  6. Any document issued as a proof of address

Form 61

Another form which is required to be filled by an individual/company in order to make financial transactions in situations when he/she doesn’t own a PAN card.
