Orai is located in the Jalaun district of Uttar Pradesh. This city functions as the district headquarters of the Jalaun district in the Jhansi division of the state. The NH-27 passes through Orai, which is midway between Jhansi and Kanpur. Orai is believed to have been named after a saint - Rishi Uddalak who is worshipped in the area. Orai was ruled by the Rajputs, the Chandels, the Mughals, the Marathas and many other regional rulers. Orai became a scene of much violence during the Great Revolt of 1857. The residents of the area who were in the 53rd Native Infantry deserted their officers and rebelled against them as soon as they came to know of the rising in Kanpur. Orai witnessed major changes after 1990 when industries were introduced to the area. HUL, Sun India Pharmacy and several other companies opened their units in and around Orai. The city was further developed as schools and colleges were established, roads were built and the infrastructure was improved. A predominantly dry area, Orai is watered by the Bethwa Canal that supports the production of grain, oil-seeds, cotton and ghee which are exported. The city has more than 2 lakh residents and they speak in Hindi.
Punjab National Bank is the first bank which is Swadeshi and began with the authorized national capital. The business of PNB Bank was started on 12th April 1895. The PNB was the first bank which was entirely managed by the Indians along with the national capital. The bank has spread its network with 6900 branches across India out of which 62% branches are in rural and semi-urban areas. The bank is operating a transformational exercise named as "Mission Parivartan" a think tank division for business excellence to improve the efficiency, profitability, and productivity of the bank for long-term sustenance. In digital banking, the bank has gone under several developments such as the opening of "PNB DIGI-HUT" the first proof of concept model of the digital branch launched at the Dwarka head office. The bank has also introduced an Integrated Fee Portal for its customers to enable fee payments through internet banking gateway. RBI approved the bank to act as Bharat Bill Payment Operating Unit which was made live on September 2017. The bank took some initiatives for driving financial inclusion in fiscal 2018, such as biometrics based aadhar seeding and authentication of the existing customers. It also introduced Atal Pension Yojana registration facility at the Business Correspondent locations.
