Kollam, formerly known as Desinganadu, is an old seaport and a thriving city in the Indian state of Kerala. It is a port city along the Laccadive Sea coast. Mar Sabor, an East Syriac bishop, had founded the Kollam Port. The city is situated on the banks of the Ashtamudi Lake. In ancient times, Kollam had a strong commercial relationship with the Chinese. Kollam city ranks 5th in the country and 3rd in Kerala in terms of per capita income and economic performance. The port city has an excellent export background. Fishing and dairy farming largely contribute to the citys economy. The government is about to establish a fishing harbor in the vicinity of the city in order to increase the fish production. Fisheries, hatcheries, turkey and poultry farms are also plentiful in the city. The city also has a rich mineral base. The sands on the beaches and the entire area has a good amount of heavy minerals such as Ilmenite, Monosite, Rutile and Zircon, which can be used for industrial purposes. There are limestone deposits and bauxite in and around the city. Kollam is often called the "Cashew Capital of the World", as the city is noted for its traditional cashew business. This city is a microcosm of Kerala and its residents are from various religious, ethnic and linguistic groups.
Punjab National Bank is the first bank which is Swadeshi and began with the authorized national capital. The business of PNB Bank was started on 12th April 1895. The PNB was the first bank which was entirely managed by the Indians along with the national capital. The bank has spread its network with 6900 branches across India out of which 62% branches are in rural and semi-urban areas. The bank is operating a transformational exercise named as "Mission Parivartan" a think tank division for business excellence to improve the efficiency, profitability, and productivity of the bank for long-term sustenance. In digital banking, the bank has gone under several developments such as the opening of "PNB DIGI-HUT" the first proof of concept model of the digital branch launched at the Dwarka head office. The bank has also introduced an Integrated Fee Portal for its customers to enable fee payments through internet banking gateway. RBI approved the bank to act as Bharat Bill Payment Operating Unit which was made live on September 2017. The bank took some initiatives for driving financial inclusion in fiscal 2018, such as biometrics based aadhar seeding and authentication of the existing customers. It also introduced Atal Pension Yojana registration facility at the Business Correspondent locations.
